MINEOLA, N.Y., June 19, 2008 - As the rain-soaked Midwest continues to battle floodwaters from heavy storms, the American Red Cross is in its largest flood relief effort in nearly 15 years. From Kansas to West Virginia, more than 2,000 Red Cross workers are assisting people with vast amounts of clean up supplies, dozens of shelters and tens of thousands of meals.

Far too often, discussion relating to water safety does not occur until the tragic death of a child, and sadly, Long Island has experienced its first drowning death of the summer. Hopefully it will be the last, yet statistics show that over 3,000 thousand people die as a result of drowning each year in the United States—most of these deaths are children.
