FREEPORT, N.Y., Jan. 18, 2008 -- Fire swept through a Church Street home this afternoon, and volunteers from the American Red Cross in Nassau County responded to provide assistance.

A family of four was displaced by the fire. The Nassau Red Cross provided them with temporary shelter in a nearby motel, as well as funds for food, clothing, according to Larry Plavin, Red Cross volunteer. Relief totaled $1,815.

All Red Cross disaster assistance is provided at no cost. In the past six months alone, volunteers from the Nassau Red Cross have responded to 54 local disasters--mainly home fires--and have provided $63,000 in direct relief.

The Nassau Red Cross is able to perform its mission thanks to the generosity of individuals who donate their time or money to the nonprofit agency. To learn how you can help, visit the American Red Cross in Nassau County at 195 Willis Avenue in Mineola, or online at www.nassauredcross.org.
