ELMONT, N.Y., Feb. 4, 2008 – Fire gutted a Hunnewell Avenue home this morning, and volunteers from the American Red Cross in Nassau County are providing relief at the scene.

At least four people have been displaced and the Nassau Red Cross is currently assessing their needs, according to Margaret Bullwinkel, Red Cross volunteer. It is likely that they will be provided with temporary shelter in a nearby motel and funds for food and clothing.

Additionally, the Nassau Red Cross is providing first responders with hot coffee, water and snacks as they investigate the incident. All Red Cross disaster assistance is provided at no cost. In just over seven months, volunteers from the Nassau Red Cross have responded to 70 local disasters--mainly home fires--and have provided over $85,000 in direct relief.

The Nassau Red Cross is able to perform its mission thanks to the generosity of individuals who donate their time or money to the nonprofit agency. To learn how you can help, visit the American Red Cross in Nassau County at 195 Willis Avenue in Mineola, or online at www.nassauredcross.org.
