OCEANSIDE, N.Y., April 19, 2008 - Volunteers from the American Red Cross in Nassau County are at the scene of a now-extinguished commercial blaze in “Oil City” to provide canteen services to hundreds of firefighters and law enforcement.
Since their arrival to the scene, shortly after 3:30 p.m., Nassau Red Cross volunteers have passed out several cases of bottled water and snacks to first responders. For many volunteers it has been a long afternoon because many had been providing relief at a Hempstead fire beforehand.
All Red Cross disaster assistance is provided at no cost to those affected. In just over nine months, volunteers from the Nassau Red Cross have responded to over 120 local emergencies--mainly home fires--and have provided nearly $146,000 in relief to over 640 Nassau residents.
The American Red Cross in Nassau County is only able to perform its services due to the generosity of individuals who donate their time or money to the nonprofit agency. To learn how you can help, visit the local chapter at 195 Willis Avenue in Mineola or online at www.nassauredcross.org.
