Hurricane Season, Not Over Yet!
By admin @ 1:50 PM :: 719 Views :: 0 Comments :: Nassau County News, Press Releases

MINEOLA, N.Y., Sept. 27, 2008—On this, the 23rd anniversary of Hurricane Gloria, the American Red Cross in Nassau County reminds residents that hurricane season is far from over.

Hurricane Gloria began as a Category 3 (winds 111-155 mph) when it slammed Cape Hatteras, N.C., in 1985 but fortunately was downgraded to a Category 1 (winds between 74-95 mph) when it made landfall on Long Island. Even so, it caused extensive damage and left most residents without power for days.

On average, hurricanes of Gloria’s strength hit the Island once every 17 years—obviously, Long Island is well overdue. And though the Nassau Red Cross, working closely with the Nassau County Office of Emergency Management, has greatly increased its level of preparedness this season, it is ultimately the responsibility of all Long Islanders to do their part.

The Nassau Red Cross suggests that residents follow these steps to prepare—not only for a hurricane, but any disaster:

1. Get a Kit: Stock enough non-perishable food, water and other essentials like flashlights, batteries and medical needs to last at least three days. Have an emergency Go Bag to take with you in case of an evacuation. In your bag, have copies of important documents like insurance papers, identification, and prescriptions.

2. Make a Plan: Every member of your family should discuss responsibilities during an emergency. Know where you can go if evacuation is necessary. Have a contact established outside of the region in case members of your family are separated.

3. Be Informed: Stay tuned to your local media. Have a battery-operated radio in case of power outages. Heed all government warnings and directions.

The Atlantic hurricane season began June 1 and ends Nov. 30. For more preparedness tips, log on to www.LIprepares.org or call (516) 747-3500. The American Red Cross in Nassau County is located at 195 Willis Avenue in Mineola.
