MINEOLA, N.Y., Oct. 28, 2008 – A wind advisory has been issued for Long Island and the American Red Cross in Nassau County reminds residents to be prepared and exercise caution.
According to the National Weather Service, winds this afternoon and evening could gust to 50 mph. Coupled with wet conditions, the wind could contribute to downed trees, wires and power outages.
Keeping these hazards in mind, the Nassau Red Cross urges residents to do the following:
-
Avoid driving during inclement weather. If unavoidable, then be aware of hazards while driving. Never attempt to drive through standing water—sometimes what looks to be only a few inches of water could be much more.
-
Expect heavy delays on area roadways and ensure that you have enough fuel in your car. Have bottled water and snacks with you.
-
At home, be prepared for electrical outages. Have water and food on hand that does not require refrigeration.
-
Have flashlights with extra batteries. The use of candles is discouraged because they pose a fire hazard.
-
Secure lawn furniture, toys, etc., to prevent items from blowing away and becoming a hazard to property and individuals.
-
Stay informed through local media and have a portable radio in case of power failure.
Finally, the American Red Cross in Nassau County urges all Long Islanders to heed advisories from government agencies. To learn more about being prepared for weather-related emergencies, visit www.nassauredcross.org or call the Nassau Red Cross at (516) 747-3500.
