MINEOLA, N.Y., Dec. 6, 2008 -- The American Red Cross is asking Long Islanders to take part in a National Day of Giving, Saturday, Dec. 13. Funds raised will help the agency replenish its Disaster Relief Fund, which was depleted by a disaster-filled year.
“This year, America faced an active hurricane season; the worst Midwest flooding in fifteen years; and a record-breaking number of tornadoes,” said Frank Cassano, CEO of the American Red Cross in Nassau County. “Sadly though, many of these disasters were overshadowed by events like the national elections.”
To be prepared for future disasters, the Red Cross launched a campaign in September to raise $100 million by year’s end. According to Cassano, $70 million has been raised and a final holiday push is in full swing. On Dec. 13, volunteers from Long Island’s Red Cross chapters will hit the streets to help solicit funds.
“Even in tough economic times, Long Islanders have always donated generously during times of need,” said Cassano. “I am confident that they will do so again and I am grateful to the businesses that have already offered us the opportunity to raise funds at their properties this holiday season.”
