Ice Storm Cripples Northeast, Red Cross Urges Long Islanders To Help
By admin @ 2:10 PM :: 608 Views :: 0 Comments :: Nassau County News, Press Releases

MINEOLA, N.Y., Dec. 12, 2008 – Fortunately, Long Island received nothing more than a good soaking from last night’s storm; however, much of Upstate New York and New England has been crippled by ice that has snapped power lines and left millions without power.

The American Red Cross has already opened several shelters to provide a safe and warm place for affected residents. This disaster comes at a time when the American Red Cross is desperately seeking funds to replenish a Disaster Relief Fund that has been depleted by a disaster-filled year.

“This year, America faced an active hurricane season; the worst Midwest flooding in fifteen years; and a record-breaking number of tornadoes,” said Frank Cassano, CEO of the American Red Cross in Nassau County. “Sadly though, many of these disasters were overshadowed by events like the national elections.”

To be prepared for future disasters, like the ice storm, the Red Cross launched a campaign in September to raise $100 million by year’s end. According to Cassano, $70 million has been raised and a final holiday push is in full swing. On Dec. 13, volunteers from Long Island’s Red Cross chapters will hit the streets to help solicit funds during a National Day of Giving.

“Even in tough economic times, Long Islanders have always donated generously during times of need,” said Cassano. “I am confident that they will do so again and I am grateful to the businesses that have already offered us the opportunity to raise funds at their properties this holiday season.”

In Nassau County, volunteers can be found on Dec. 13, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., at:

  • Lowe’s Home Improvement, 700 Dibblee Drive, Garden City.
  • Hicks Nurseries, 100 Jericho Turnpike, Westbury.

In Suffolk County, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at:

  • Lowe’s Home Improvement, 2796 Route 112, Medford.

Long Islanders who are unable to visit these locations can make a donation by calling 1-800-RED-CROSS or logging onto www.redcross.org. They can also use their cell phone to donate $5 by text messaging the keyword “GIVE” (4483) to “2HELP” (24357). All Red Cross disaster assistance is provided at no cost to those affected thanks to the generosity of individuals who donate their time or money to the nonprofit agency.
