UNIONDALE, N.Y., Dec. 29, 2008 -- Three adults and a child were displaced last night when fire gutted their Northgate Drive home. Volunteers from the American Red Cross in Nassau County responded to provide assistance.

The residents were afforded temporary shelter in a nearby motel and funds for food and clothing, according to volunteer Linda Cohn. Relief totaled $1,405.

The Nassau Red Cross has responded to over 140 local emergencies this year--mainly home fires--and has provided aid to over 500 residents. All Red Cross disaster assistance is provided at no cost to those affected, thanks to financial contributions from individuals and the donation of time by volunteeers.
