GLEN HEAD, N.Y., Jan. 16, 2009 -- Nearly a dozen residents of a Maple Place home were displaced by a fire last night and volunteers from the American Red Cross in Nassau County responded to provide assistance.

The Nassau Red Cross was not able to locate all of the residents; however, volunteers did provide funds for food to a family of four, according to Larry Plavin, Red Cross volunteer. The family was offered temporary shelter, but opted to stay with other family members.

If necessary, the Red Cross will return to the scene to assist the other residents.

All Red Cross disaster assistance is provided at no cost to those affected, thanks to the generosity of individuals who donate their time or money to the nonprofit. To learn how you can help, visit www.nassauredcross.org or call the Nassau Red Cross at (516) 747-3500.
