MINEOLA, N.Y., April 6, 2009 – As the rescue and relief effort continues in Italy in the wake of a 6.3 magnitude earthquake, the American Red Cross continues to monitor the situation. At this time, the Italian Red Cross has not asked for outside assistance; however, the American Red Cross is in communication with its sister society, as well as the International Federation, and stands ready to provide assistance if requested.
Because the Red Cross Society of Italy is still fully engaged in emergency relief operations, it has not indicated its capacity to accept disaster welfare inquiries. Concerned family and friends in the United States may be unable to contact their loved ones for some time. The following is suggested:
-
For inquiries about relatives living in Italy who are citizens of Italy, keep calling or try contacting other family members who live nearby. Although the Red Cross is not accepting International Disaster Welfare Inquiries at this time, local chapters will be notified when the situation changes.
-
Inquiries concerning U.S. citizens living or traveling in Italy should be referred to the U.S. Department of State, Office of Overseas Citizens Services, at 1-888-407-4747 or 202-647-5225.
The American Red Cross will continue to provide information as it becomes available. The American Red Cross in Nassau County is located at 195 Willis Avenue in Mineola and can be contacted by calling (516) 747-3500.
