UNIONDALE, N.Y, July 12, 2009 -- Despite an accident caused by a hit and run driver, volunteers from the American Red Cross in Nassau County provided relief to four adults left homeless by a blaze on New Street this morning.
The accident occurred at approximately 4:25 a.m. as a Red Cross emergency response vehicle was traveling northbound on Uniondale Avenue just before Summer Street. An unidentified vehicle, dark in color, was heading southbound when it swerved across the line and sideswiped the Red Cross vehicle. The Red Cross vehicle immediately pulled over; however, the other driver fled the scene.
Fortunately, the Red Cross volunteer was unharmed. Despite damage, the response vehicle was still drivable. The volunteer called 911 and a report was filed with the Nassau County Police Department's First Precinct.
Fortunately, the Red Cross did have other volunteers and vehicles at the fire scene. The displaced residents were afforded temporary shelter in a nearby motel, along with funds for food and clothing, according to Deb Rumore, volunteer.
All Red Cross disaster assistance is provided at no cost to those affected, thanks to the generosity of individuals. To learn how you can help the American Red Cross in Nassau County, visit online at www.nassauredcross.org or call (516) 747-3500.
