Be Ready for Summer Blackouts
By admin @ 9:08 AM :: 315 Views :: 0 Comments :: Nassau County News, Press Releases

MINEOLA, N.Y., July 30, 2009 - It seemed to come late this year, but it is now summertime with hot and humid days that drive people into their air-conditioned homes for relief. With the increased use of electricity, it becomes increasingly harder for utility companies to keep up with the demand--often resulting in blackouts.

The American Red Cross in Nassau County reminds residents that they should prepare in advance of such events, especially because of the health and safety concerns created by power outages.

“It’s important to remember that power outages not only affect homes, but businesses as well,” says Carlos Varon, director of emergency services for the Nassau Red Cross. “Because of this, people may not be able to purchase the essentials--even automatic teller machines could be rendered inoperable, exasperating the situation.”

The first step toward being prepared is to assemble essential supplies including:

· Flashlights-due to the extreme risk of fire, do not use candles during a power outage.

· Portable radio to listen to weather and government announcements.

· At least three days worth of water. The Red Cross recommends one gallon a day per person.

· A small supply of food that does not need refrigeration.

· Make sure prescriptions for medications are filled. If one’s medication requires refrigeration, most can be kept in a closed refrigerator for several hours without a problem. If unsure, check with your physician or pharmacist.

Persons with special needs must do even more to prepare, especially those who rely on electricity for motorized wheelchairs, life-support systems or other power-dependent equipment. Many utility companies keep a list and map of the locations of power-dependent customers in case of an emergency. Contact the customer service department of your local utility company to learn more.
