GREAT NECK, N.Y., July 30, 2009 -- A roof collapse at a Middle Neck Road apartment complex forced the evacuation of dozens of residents Thursday afternoon. Volunteers from the American Red Cross in Nassau County responded to provide relief.
Though the collapse only affected one building and its six apartments, engineers found structural concerns in other units of the complex. While inspections and repairs were made, the Nassau Red Cross opened a reception center at a nearby firehouse. There, residents were afforded a place to cool off, eat and get information.
Additionally, a number of Red Cross volunteers provided water and snacks at the scene for first responders, emergency officials and workers.
Fortunately, the majority of displaced residents were able to find shelter on their own with family, friends or through their insurance companies; however, at least one couple has been provided lodging through the Red Cross.
All Red Cross disaster assistance is provided at no cost to those affected, thanks to the generosity of individuals who donate their time or money to the organization.
