MINEOLA, N.Y., Aug. 21, 2009 -- Though Long Islanders can breathe a sigh of relief that Hurricane Bill is tracking away from land, they should be prepared for severe weather conditions this weekend.

The same storm front that is keeping Hurricane Bill from hitting the coast is expected to produce severe thunderstorms, high winds and periods of heavy rain throughout the weekend. The storm system has been responsible for several tornadoes in the Southeastern and Midwestern United States.

Additionally, Hurricane Bill is already churning up ocean waves in the region and causing dangerous rip currents. As the hurricane moves north, waves crashing on Long Island beaches could be eight to ten feet high, causing erosion and possible coastal flooding.

As with any storm, the Nassau Red Cross advises Long Islanders to be prepared for power outages by storing non-perishable food and water; flashlights; a radio; and a small bag with essential items in case of evacuation. Lawn items should be secured.

During inclement weather, avoid driving if possible and never enter flooded roadways or approach downed wires.

Though the Nassau Red Cross expects damage to be minimal from the storm and does not foresee any need for opening shelters at this time, its volunteers are on standby. Senior staff will be monitoring the weather throughout the weekend and are in close contact with local and federal agencies.
