MINEOLA, N.Y., Aug. 26, 2009 -- With Tropical Storm Danny eyeing the Atlantic seaboard, the American Red Cross urges Long Islanders to get prepared now.
Some weather models indicate that the storm could very well increase to hurricane strength and could make landfall on the east coast, anywhere between the Carolinas and New England and as early as this weekend.
Even if the storm does not make its way to Long Island, simple steps taken now can prepare residents for the entire hurricane season which lasts until Nov. 30.
These steps include:
Get a Kit. Most Long Islanders will be asked to shelter at home and should have 3-5 days worth of non-perishable food and water on hand. They should also have flashlights, batteries and a radio. A smaller "Go Bag" should be assembled for each family member in case of evacuation. This bag should include snacks, water, hygiene items, change of clothes, a radio and copies of important documents.
Make a Plan. If you live along the coast, know where evacuation routes are and know where you will stay if you have to leave your home. Determine a primary and secondary meeting place for all family members in case you become separated. Phone lines can become overburdened in a disaster--establish an out of town contact that information can be relayed to. Make sure everyone in the family knows and understands the plan.
Be Informed. Monitor local media for updates on the weather and instructions from local emergency officials. Find out what the emergency plan is for your municipality. Heed all government warnings and instructions.
