Red Cross Working Multiple Disasters, You Can Help
By admin @ 5:08 PM :: 286 Views :: 0 Comments :: Nassau County News, Press Releases

MINEOLA, N.Y., Oct. 1, 2009 -- The global Red Cross network is fully engaged in relief efforts for multiple disasters across Asia and the Pacific—and the American Red Cross is asking for your help.

The most recent tragedy occurred today when a second earthquake struck Indonesia, leaving hundreds dead and many more without food, shelter or utilities. The Indonesian Red Cross is leading the humanitarian response, providing first aid services, shelter, food and supplies like tarps, blankets and mosquito nets. The American Red Cross is contributing to their efforts with an initial contribution of $100,000 and stands ready to offer more if requested. Additionally, the American Red Cross has over 300 employees already in Indonesia working on long-term recovery efforts related to the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. They stand ready to assist if their expertise is requested.

Meanwhile, Red Crossers are working feverishly in the Samoan islands after Wednesday’s deadly tsunami. In American Samoa, a U.S. territory, American Red Cross volunteers are providing food and shelter to residents. Additional volunteers are en route from the American mainland, along with needed supplies. Officials believe that it may take more than a month to restore power fully on the island. On nearby Samoa, a sovereign nation, Samoan Red Cross volunteers are doing the same. The International Red Cross has begun to direct funds toward efforts there and the American Red Cross stands ready to assist its sister society.

The Red Cross is also wrestling with the aftermath of Typhoon Ketsana and destruction caused in the Philippines, Vietnam and Cambodia. The American Red Cross has contributed $100,000 to efforts following this disaster and stands ready to offer more. The American Red Cross is also now able to process International Disaster Welfare Inquiries to help local residents inquire about family members in the affected area.

Long Islanders can help by making a financial contribution. Call 1-800-REDCROSS, or visit www.redcross.org and choose whether to donate to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund (American Samoa) or American Red Cross International Response Fund.
