MINEOLA, N.Y., Nov. 20, 2009 - In September, the American Red Cross gave Long Island students an essay assignment: In 500 words or less, what does the Red Cross mean to you? On Dec. 4th, all entries must be in.
“I’m a firm believer that if you want to find out if people truly understand who you are, then go to the children,” said Frank Cassano, CEO of the Nassau Red Cross. “If the youth know, we can assume that their parents do--or soon will--thanks to their efforts.”
The Red Cross will present the winning writer with four tickets to see the New York Islanders take on the Carolina Hurricanes, Feb. 6 at Nassau Coliseum.
The contest is open to Nassau County residents, grades 3-5. Entries should include name, grade, birth date, school, address and phone number.
Though essays may be submitted individually, the Nassau Red Cross does encourage educators to participate by holding contests within their schools and then submit the top entries from each grade. The winning schools will receive recognition and awards.
Entries should be mailed to: American Red Cross in Nassau County, attn: Public Relations, 195 Willis Avenue, Mineola, N.Y., 11501. For more information about the contest, call (516) 747-3500, ext. 213.
