Winter Storm Warning Issued, Red Cross Advises Long Islanders to Be Cautious

MINEOLA, N.Y., Feb. 9, 2010 - A winter storm warning has been issued for Long Island with forecasts calling for heavy snow and winds beginning between after midnight and continuing throughout the day Wednesday. Accumulations could range from 8-12 inches and winds might cause blizzard conditions. The American Red Cross in Nassau County urges residents to be prepared and exercise caution.

Winter storms can create hazardous situations and lead to power outages. Besides having non-perishable food and water on hand, it is wise to have a battery-powered radio to monitor local news and weather reports.

The storm is expected to be at its worst during the day, so commuters should be prepared for delays and cancellations. Driving is never encouraged during inclement weather; however, if it is unavoidable, drivers should also be ready for long delays and icy roads. Ensure that gas tanks are topped off and have emergency supplies on hand. These include:

  • Water and snacks.
  • Booster cables.
  • Shovel.
  • Blankets.
  • Flashlight.
  • Cellular phone and charger.

Another major concern is fire and carbon monoxide safety. Sadly, as temperatures drop, the instances of preventable home fires often increase. Heating sources should be kept at least three feet away from materials that can catch fire like paper, curtains, and bedding. To prevent carbon monoxide poisoning, do not use generators indoors and ensure that chimneys are clear of debris.

Finally, don't overdo it when clearing sidewalks and driveways of snow. Dress properly, keep hydrated and take breaks to prevent injuries or illness.

Long Islanders can find a wealth of preparedness information by logging on to www.nassauredcross.org. They can also contact the Nassau Red Cross at (516) 747-3500.
