MINEOLA, N.Y., Feb. 28, 2010 - Far too many Long Islanders do not realize that their local American Red Cross chapter is here to help them until disaster strikes. So, the Nassau Red Cross is opening its doors to the public with its open house program - Get to Know Us, Before You Need Us!
“I run into so many people that are shocked to find out that the Red Cross is about much more than hurricane relief or blood drives,” said Frank Cassano, chief executive officer of the Nassau Red Cross. “Many are surprised to learn that we have hundreds of volunteers right here at home who are dedicated to serving their fellow Long Islanders and making this a safer place to live.”
Each tour is 55 minutes in length and highlights the array of services provided by the local chapter and its volunteers. Intended to be educational, there is no charge and donations will not be solicited.
“All we ask is that Long Islanders spend a little time with us to see what we’re about and maybe dispel any myths that may be out there,” said Cassano. “We are very proud of the work that we do and if attendees like what they hear, maybe they can tell their friends, family or coworkers about us.”
The message does seem to be reaching people.
“I was very impressed with how the Nassau Red Cross is preparing for any hurricane that might hit Long Island and their great lifeguard training program that is reaching economically disadvantaged youth,” said recent attendee Steve Franjola, from Municipal Credit Union in Mineola. “The teenagers are learning life skills that are priceless and I heartily recommend that all Nassau residents attend a Red Cross Open House."
Upcoming Get to Know Us sessions include:
Thursday, March 18th at Noon.
Reservations are not required; however, potential attendees should call or check online in advance, as dates are subject to change.
