MINEOLA, N.Y., March 12, 2010 -- The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for the region, effective Saturday through Sunday morning. The American Red Cross in Nassau County urges Long Islanders to be cautious.
A storm will bring heavy rain and strong winds to Long Island today and will increase in intensity Saturday. Forecasters expect 2-4 inches of rain and gusts to 45 mph. Coastal and street flooding is possible.
As with any storm, residents are advised to stay off the roads and be prepared for power outages. Residents should secure lawn furniture, trash cans and other outdoor items to prevent wind-blown hazards.
If driving is unavoidable, be sure to have emergency supplies on hand like water, snacks, jumper cables and a cell phone with charger. Never drive through flooded roads -- water may be deeper than it appears and may hide other hazards.
While thinking about safety, the Nassau Red Cross reminds Long Islanders that Daylight Saving Time begins Sunday at 1 a.m. While moving the clocks ahead, change the batteries in smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.
