NORTH MERRICK, N.Y., March 28, 2010 -- A mother and her three children are resting comfortably tonight in a motel after escaping a blaze on Thomas Street Sunday afternoon. Considering that the children were located in a closet by a neighbor, they are lucky to have only suffered mild smoke inhalation.
Volunteers from the American Red Cross in Nassau County met with the family at Nassau University Medical Center and provided them with the lodging, as well as funds for food and clothing. According to Bob Pollack, Nassau Red Cross volunteer, the children ranged in age from 5-7 and were all in their pajamas.
"Luckily, no one was seriously injured in this blaze," said Sam Kille, Nassau Red Cross spokesman. "However, it demonstrates how important it is to teach children how to get out of the house during a fire and to establish a safe meeting place outside."
All Red Cross disaster assistance is provided at no cost to those affected, thanks to the generosity of donors and volunteers.
