It's That Time of Year! Prepare Now for Hurricane Season

MINEOLA, N.Y., May 21, 2010 – The Atlantic hurricane season is upon us and the American Red Cross in Nassau County reminds Long Islanders that the time to prepare is now.

“Far too often, people tend to wait until a storm is forecast to begin their preparations,” said Frank Cassano, chief executive officer of the Nassau Red Cross. “History has shown that those who wait are met with empty store shelves and a large degree of confusion.”

Being prepared may be simpler than some think. The Red Cross urges residents to take the following steps:

1. Get a kit. Considering that it could be 3-5 days before outside assistance is available, residents should have plenty of water (a gallon per person, per day) and nonperishable food on hand. Other items include flashlights, a battery or crank-powered radio, medications, a first aid kit and cash (ATM and credit cards are of no use during a blackout). Individuals should also have portable “Go Bags” prepared in case of evacuation. Items to think of include copies of important documents, a change of clothing, and hygiene items.

2. Make a plan. Every member of a household needs to know where they would go and what they would do in the event of an emergency. Because phone lines may be overloaded, designate an emergency contact outside of the affected area that all members of the family can check in with.

3. Be informed. Various municipalities have emergency plans geared toward their own needs – reach out to local officials to learn them. With Long Island’s population, it would be impossible for every resident to evacuate from their homes. Heed instructions from local authorities regarding whether to evacuate or shelter in place. Stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio, local radio, television and the Internet for latest updates.

Hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30. Historically, Long Island averages a direct hit every 17-18 years. Considering the fact that the last major storm was Hurricane Gloria in 1985, the Island is long overdue.
